Bhubaneswar, Jun 13: The Odisha Cabinet has approved revised English spellings for 64 places across 26 districts, marking a significant step towards restoring the linguistic and cultural identity of the state’s geography. The decision, officials said, is part of a broader initiative to correct colonial-era distortions and align place names more closely with Odia pronunciation, officials said on Saturday.

In Ganjam district, four prominent towns have received updated spellings: Berhampur will now be written as Brahmapur, Aska as Asika, Surada as Sorada, and Hinjilicut as Hinjilikatu. These changes were recommended by a high-level committee constituted by the state government after examining public feedback and proposals from district collectors, elected representatives, and citizens.

The Cabinet’s approval underscores Odisha’s effort to reclaim its cultural heritage through language. Officials noted that the revised spellings are intended not only to reflect phonetic accuracy but also to strengthen the state’s identity in official records and public usage. “This is a step towards correcting historical distortions and ensuring that place names resonate with Odia culture and heritage,” a senior official said.

The state government will now approach central agencies, including the Survey of India, Indian Railways, the Postal Department, and the Registrar General of India, to update their records accordingly. The move is expected to gradually standardise the new spellings across maps, railway stations, postal services, and administrative documents.

The initiative has been welcomed by cultural activists and linguists, who see it as part of a larger movement to decolonise nomenclature and restore authenticity to local identities. While some residents may take time to adapt to the new spellings, officials believe the changes will strengthen Odisha’s cultural pride and linguistic integrity in the long run.
