Bhubaneswar, Dec 3: Notification has been issued for the Odisha bye election for one seat, which will take place December 20 with the filing of nominations begins Tuesday (Dec 3).
The seat became vacant following the resignation of Sujeet Kumar from Biju Janata Dal (BJD), who later joined the BJP September 6. The winning candidate will serve the remaining term of approximately 16 months until April 2, 2026.
Sujeet Kumar resigned from the Upper House seat, citing negligence by the BJD. Kumar said that he took the hard decision in the interest of people of Kalahandi and Odisha.
He was welecomed to the Saffron party by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Odisha Pravari Bijaypal Singh Tomar, BJP national general secretary Arun Singh and Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahtab.

✨As per the notification, the nomination submission process will start from Tuesday (December 3). The last date for filing nomination is December 10.
The verification process will take place December 11. The last date for the withdrawal of candidature has been set for December 13.
Earlier, the Election Commission had announced bypolls for six Rajya Sabha seats, including one in Odisha, December 20. The other seats up that will go for bypolls are three in Andhra Pradesh and one each in West Bengal and Haryana, the EC release had stated.
