Odisha Braces for Thunderstorms as Cyclonic Circulation Intensifies

Key Points

Cyclonic circulation over Bangladesh triggers rain in Odisha till Oct 9.

Monsoon withdrawal delayed, likely to begin after October 17.

Odisha records 86.3 mm rainfall since Oct 1, above normal levels.

Bhubaneswar, Oct 8: A cyclonic circulation has formed over southern Bangladesh and adjoining areas, bringing active weather conditions to Odisha.

According to the regional meteorological department, this system will remain active until October 9, resulting in thunderstorm-induced rainfall across the state. Coastal and north-interior Odisha are expected to witness more intense showers over the next 3 to 4 days.

Typically, the monsoon begins its withdrawal from Odisha around October 15. But current atmospheric conditions are not favourable for its retreat in the next five days.

Regional Director of the Meteorological Department, Manorama Mohanty, stated that the withdrawal may begin gradually after October 17, with western Odisha likely to see the first signs of change in wind patterns.

Since October 1, Odisha has received 86.3 mm of rainfall, which is above the seasonal average. This surge in precipitation is attributed to the active cyclonic systems and delayed monsoon withdrawal.
