Weather Alert / Odisha Braces for Rain till August 30, Schools Shut in Flood-Hit Areas

Bhubaneswar, Aug 25: The low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal remains active, ensuring rainfall across Odisha until August 30.

However, meteorologists note that rainfall intensity will gradually decrease from today, with light to moderate showers expected mainly in coastal and north-coastal districts.

The system is currently active over Gangetic West Bengal, northern Odisha, and adjoining Jharkhand. Accompanied by thunder, lightning, and gusty winds at 30–40 kmph, the weather department has issued a yellow warning for several districts including Ganjam, Gajapati, Khordha, Nayagada, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Kataka, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Sundargada, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, and Bargada.

In Bhadrak, continuous rainfall and flood-like conditions have prompted the district administration to take precautionary measures. District Collector has ordered closure of schools and Anganwadi centres in vulnerable blocks to ensure safety of children.

A total of 81 schools across Bhadrak, Tihidi, and Chandbali blocks will remain closed tomorrow. Additionally, 103 Anganwadi centres in Tihidi and Chandbali blocks have been declared closed.

Similarly, in Jajpur district, authorities have announced holidays for 93 schools across five blocks. These include 20 schools in Binjharpur, 4 in Bari, 1 in Rasulpur, 67 in Dasarathpur, and 1 in Dharmasala block.

Meanwhile, the national capital Delhi continues to reel under heavy rainfall. Persistent showers since early morning have left several areas waterlogged, disrupting traffic movement.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a rainfall alert for Delhi and NCR, warning that showers may continue for the next few hours.

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, avoid waterlogged areas, and follow safety advisories. With the low-pressure system expected to persist, the administration is focusing on flood management, relief operations, and ensuring public safety.
