Odisha Braces for Rain: Minister Confirms Flood Situation Under Control

Bhubaneswar, Sep 2: Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari has assured that the flood situation across Odisha remains under control despite heavy rainfall and rising river levels in several districts.

 

Speaking to the media, Pujari stated that a low-pressure system formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal at 5:30 am on Tuesday, which is expected to bring rainfall and winds of 40–45 km/h across 30 districts from September 1 to 5.

 

Districts such as Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Deogarh have been issued warnings due to potential flooding, while Malkangiri, Nayagarh, Boudh, Sonepur, and Balangir are under alert for heavy rainfall. Keonjhar recorded an exceptional 215 mm of rainfall, although the average across the state remains around 15 mm.

Water levels in several rivers are rising, but no danger signals have been issued yet. The Budhabalanga and Jalaka rivers are approaching warning levels, while the Mahanadi remains stable. At Hirakud Dam, water is being conserved and no gates have been opened, indicating no immediate threat.

 

Balasore and Malkangiri districts have been significantly affected, with two bridges in Malkangiri submerged due to torrential rains. Relief centres are on standby, though evacuation has not yet been necessary. The government has assured that all necessary facilities will be provided at relief shelters and compensation will be issued to those affected.
