Odisha Braces for More Rainfall as Fresh Low Pressure Brewing Over Bay of Bengal

Key Points

IMD predicts new low-pressure formation over Bay of Bengal on October 9.

Odisha has already faced 16 monsoon systems this season.

Gajapati district suffers major damage from recent heavy rainfall.

Bhubaneswar, Oct 4: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert regarding the formation of a fresh low-pressure area or cyclonic circulation over the northern Bay of Bengal around October 9.

This development could bring renewed rainfall activity and potential weather disruptions across coastal Odisha.

According to IMD estimates, this would be the 17th such system to impact Odisha since the onset of the monsoon. The state has already witnessed 16 low-pressure systems this season, many of which have triggered heavy rainfall and localized flooding.

The latest deep depression that crossed the Odisha coast has now weakened into a regular depression, but its residual effects continue to linger. The rainfall caused by this system has led to significant damage in southern districts, particularly in Gajapati, where landslides and waterlogging have disrupted normal life.

Officials are closely monitoring the evolving weather pattern and have advised fishermen and coastal residents to remain alert. The possibility of heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and rough sea conditions cannot be ruled out if the system intensifies.

The IMD has also indicated that the upcoming low-pressure system may follow a similar trajectory as previous ones, potentially affecting southern and central Odisha districts. Disaster management teams have been kept on standby, and district administrations have been asked to prepare for emergency response.

As the monsoon season nears its end, the recurrence of such systems highlights the need for robust infrastructure and early warning mechanisms to minimize damage and ensure public safety.
