Bhubaneswar mandates CCTV, emergency exits, and traditional music at 187 pandals.
Bhubaneswar, Sep 1: With Durga Puja celebrations around the corner, authorities across Odisha have imposed strict restrictions on the use of DJ music, firecrackers, and laser lights shows during idol immersion processions. The move aims to preserve cultural sanctity, reduce noise pollution, and ensure public safety, officials said on Monday.
In Bhubaneswar, a high-level preparatory meeting was held at Police Seva Bhawan, attended by Police Commissioner S. Devdatta Singh, DCP Jagmohan Meena, Ekamra MLA Babu Singh, and members of 187 puja committees.
Officials announced that immersion processions will be conducted without DJs, laser lights, or firecrackers. Instead, traditional instruments will accompany the idols. CCTV surveillance and emergency exits will be mandatory at all pandals, with special emphasis on women’s safety.
Ekamra MLA Babu Singh also appealed to puja committees to avoid vulgar dance performances during melody shows, expressing concern over the cultural impact of such acts.

In Balasore, similar restrictions have been enforced. The district administration has permitted only four sound boxes per puja committee during immersion. Police have already seized several DJ vehicles that violated noise limits during Ganesh Puja.
However, questions have been raised by local intellectuals in Bhadrak’s Dhamnagar and Bhandaripokhari areas, where DJs from outside states continue to operate unchecked.
Balasore Collector Suryabanshi Mayur Vikash reiterated the administration’s commitment to enforcing the guidelines, while senior citizen Basudev Tripathy from Dhamnagar urged uniform enforcement across all regions.
The coordinated crackdown reflects a broader effort to restore the spiritual essence of Durga Puja while promoting peaceful and eco-friendly celebrations across Odisha.
