Odisha Assembly Gears Up For Monsoon Session With All-Party Support

Key Points

All-party meeting signals cooperation ahead of Monsoon Session.

Opposition to raise issues on farmers, women, and SC/ST communities.

BJP to present achievements and future welfare plans.

Bhubaneswar, Sep 16: Ahead of the Monsoon Session of the Odisha Assembly beginning September 18, an all-party meeting was convened to ensure smooth proceedings. Leaders from the BJP, BJD, and Congress pledged cooperation, setting the stage for a potentially constructive and high-stakes legislative session.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Deputy CM KV Singh Deo, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Mahaling, senior BJD leader Pramila Mallik, and Congress CLP leader Rama Chandra Kadam were among the key attendees. Speaker Surama Padhy presided over the meeting and urged all legislators to engage in meaningful debate while maintaining decorum.

“All parties have assured their cooperation in accordance with legislative norms. We expect meaningful discussions on public issues that could lead to impactful outcomes for the people of Odisha,” Padhy stated.

The session will begin with obituary references on September 18, followed by Private Members’ Bills on September 19. From September 20 to 25, five days have been earmarked for official business.

While the BJD assured support for the functioning of the House, it also signaled its intent to raise pressing issues such as farmers’ distress, women’s safety, and concerns of SC/ST communities. Congress, too, is expected to challenge the government over the ongoing fertiliser crisis and rising cases of violence against women.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mahaling affirmed the BJP-led government’s readiness to address all concerns. He emphasized that the session would also spotlight the achievements of the BJP government over the past 15 months, contrast them with the BJD’s 24-year tenure, and present future welfare plans.

Responding to Congress’ suggestion of a no-confidence motion with BJD support, Mahaling dismissed the idea, citing ideological differences and insufficient numbers.

Political observers believe that this short, yet crucial session will test the ruling BJP’s floor management skills, especially in the face of a more assertive Opposition.
