The 14th  Session (Winter Session) of the current 16th Odisha Legislative Assembly was adjourned sine die today, ahead of 26 scheduled working days.

Bhubaneswar, Nov 24: The 14th  Session (Winter Session) of the current 16th Odisha Legislative Assembly was adjourned sine die today, ahead of 26 scheduled working days.

Expressing anguish over the pre-closure of the session, Opposition members termed the Odisha government as an 'absconder'.

The Winter Session began on November 21 and was scheduled to run till December 30 with 30 working days in between.  Speaker Pramila Mallick adjourned the House on a motion brought by Government Chief Whip Prasant Kumar Muduli and seconded by ruling BJD members Shashi Bhushan Behera and Bhupinder Singh.

The House ran for four days amid protests by Opposition Congress and BJP members. In these four days, only one  Adjournment Motion was discussed and a bill was passed. While no business could be conducted on the first day in view of the obituary motion on former Speaker Maheswar Mohanty, the subsequent two days were stalled over the tribals' land transfer protest.

Opposition Congress and BJP members staged walkouts in protest against the shortening of the Session to four days from the scheduled 30 working days,

"It has proved that the BJD government is anti-people. They have betrayed the people of the State. There is not a single example of a Winter Session running for four days in the History of Odisha Assembly. The shortening of the session is very condemning. The government feared discussion. It turned an absconder," said Opposition Chief Whip Mohan Charan Majhi.
