Odisha Assembly Session 2026 / Odisha Assembly Adjourned For The Day Following Opposition’s Uproar

Bhubaneswar, Sep 22: The Monsoon Session of the Odisha Legislative Assembly began on Tuesday but was marred by repeated disruptions, with opposition members storming the well of the House over the amended mining law and alleged errors in school textbooks. The uproar forced multiple adjournments before the House was adjourned till 10.30 AM tomorrow.

The session began with obituary references to six former legislators and victims of the recent Nepal flash floods.

Soon after, Opposition BJD and Congress MLAs trooped into the well, raising slogans against the BJP government. While BJD members protested the reported mistakes in newly printed school textbooks, Congress legislators demanded repeal of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2026, recently passed in Parliament.

Speaker Surama Padhy appealed for order but was unable to restore calm, leading to an adjournment till 1.10 PM.

During the break, BJD MLAs joined their party’s youth and student wings in an ‘Assembly Gherao’ demonstration at Mahatma Gandhi Marg.

When the House reassembled, Opposition members continued their protests, prompting Deputy Speaker Bhabani Shankar Bhoi to adjourn proceedings till 4 PM.

The afternoon sitting too was disrupted, with opposition MLAs persisting in their demand for discussion on the MMDR Act and the textbook issue. As the din continued, the Speaker adjourned the House for the day.

BJP MLA Irasish Acharya criticised the opposition for paralysing proceedings, accusing them of obstructing legislative business.

The nine‑day Monsoon Session, scheduled to run until October 3, is expected to see the introduction of six key bills.
