Nutrition Centres in Every Panchayat: Odisha’s Plan for Food Security & Affordable Essentials For All

Key Points
Odisha government launches nutrition centres and subsidised essentials for middle-class families.
Bhubaneswar, Apr 2: In a bid to support middle-class families, the Odisha government has announced major initiatives focused on improving access to essential supplies and nutrition.
The government plans to establish nutrition centres in every panchayat, providing subsidised rates for rice, pulses, sugar, and oil to eligible families. The initiative is aimed at tackling malnutrition and ensuring food security.
During a recent legislative assembly session, Krushna Chandra Patra, Minister of Food Suppliers & Consumer Welfare, detailed the efforts and challenges faced by the government.
While wheat has been added to the list of supplies under the Food Security Scheme, logistical hurdles such as lack of storage and transportation facilities have delayed its distribution. However, discussions with central authorities have paved the way for the arrival of the first batch of wheat, with plans for continued improvements.
Additionally, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) has committed to procuring 46 lakh metric tons of rice this year, a significant increase from previous years. To address surplus stock, the Odisha government is taking measures to store 10 lakh metric tons and release another 5 lakh metric tons for free sale.
The initiatives demonstrate the Odisha government’s commitment to delivering on its promises and ensuring that the benefits of schemes reach the grassroots level. By overcoming logistical challenges, the government aims to strengthen food security for middle-class families across Odisha.
