Nuapada Bypoll Victory Marks BJP’s New Era in Odisha Politics

Key Points

Nuapada win signals BJP’s growing strength in Odisha politics.

BJD won 15 of 18 bypolls from 2000–2024 under Naveen Patnaik.

BJP secured victories in Dhamnagar (2022) and Nuapada (2025).

Bhubaneswar, Nov 14: The Nuapada bypoll result has become a defining moment in Odisha politics, showcasing the BJP’s rising strength under PM Narendra Modi’s leadership. For nearly two decades, the BJD dominated bypolls with 15 wins, but the 2025 Nuapada bypoll signals a new era as the BJP outshines Naveen Patnaik’s long-standing supremacy.

Nuapada Bypoll Victory

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a resounding victory in the Nuapada bypoll as the party candidate Jay Dholakia has clinched the by-election with a massive margin of over 80,000, reaffirming BJP’s growing influence in Odisha’s western belt.

The Nuapada bypoll win is not only strengthening the BJP’s position in the assembly but also demonstrates voter confidence in the new leadership. With BJD’s stronghold weakening, the BJP is positioning itself as a leading political force in Odisha.

BJP’s Emerging Footprint

The BJP’s breakthrough came in 2022 with Suryabanshi Suraj winning Dhamnagar bypoll. This was followed by a bigger success in 2024 general elections when BJP clinched absolute majority in the state, marking the first BJP government under CM Mohan Charan Majhi. These wins signal the BJP’s growing influence in Odisha, challenging the BJD’s long-standing dominance.

BJD’s Era of Dominance

From Rairakhol in 2001 to Jharsuguda in 2023, the BJD consistently swept bypolls, consolidating its position as Odisha’s ruling party. Leaders like Sanatan Bisi, Prafulla Samal, Mandakini Behera, and Rita Sahu became symbols of the party’s electoral strength. Even in tough contests, the BJD managed to retain its grip, reflecting Naveen Patnaik’s enduring popularity.

Congress’ Limited Success

Congress managed to secure victories in Talsara (2006) and Laxmipur (2008), but its presence in Odisha’s bypolls has largely been marginal. These wins were exceptions in an otherwise declining trajectory for the party in the state.
