Odisha / Nuapada Bypoll: Tribal Votes And Sympathy Tactics On The Cards

Key Points
Congress announces Ghasiram Majhi as its candidate for Nuapada bypoll.
BJD may field Jay Dholakia; BJP to declare its candidate soon.
Nuapada, Oct 8: As the by-election in the Nuapada Assembly segment of Odisha approaches, political activity in the region has intensified. Following major announcements by the BJP-led state government, opposition parties BJD and Congress have stepped up their efforts to retain or reclaim influence in the tribal-dominated district.
The Election Commission of India has scheduled the poll for November 11, with
results to be declared on November 14. The bypoll was necessitated by the death
of sitting BJD MLA Rajendra Dholakia on September 8 due to health-related
issues.
Congress Bets on Tribal Vote Bank
Congress has become the first party to announce its candidate—Ghasiram Majhi, a popular tribal leader who previously contested as an independent candidate. In the 2024 elections, Majhi secured over 50,000 votes and finished second, proving his grassroots appeal.
The grand old party’s earlier decision to field former PCC president Sarat Patnaik was seen as a misstep, which Majhi’s performance helped highlight. This time, Congress is banking on his credibility and tribal support to make a strong comeback.
“I thank the party for trusting me. I’m confident of victory,” said Ghasiram Majhi.

BJD Eyes Sympathy Card
The BJD, facing its first by-election since losing power in 2024 general elections, is yet to announce its candidate but is expected to begin campaigning tomorrow with a padayatra. Speculation is rife that the party may field Jay Dholakia, son of late MLA Rajendra Dholakia, to tap into emotional support. Senior leader Debi Prasad Mishra hinted that local sentiment favours a ticket from the Dholakia family.
BJP to Announce Candidate Soon
The BJP, buoyed by recent government outreach in Nuapada, is
preparing to declare its candidate shortly. State in-charge Vijay Pal Singh
Tomar confirmed that the announcement is imminent.
Following Dholakia’s demise, the BJD’s strength in the 147-member Odisha
Assembly has dropped to 50 MLAs, while the BJP holds 78 seats, Congress 14,
CPI(M) one, and three Independents.
