Nuapada, Nov 14: The Nuapada Assembly by-election is seeing a significant upswing for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Jay Dholakia, who continues to extend his lead over rivals from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Congress as the vote count advances.

 

By the end of the 24th round, Jay Dholakia, son of late MLA Rajendra Dholakia, has secured 1,23,446 votes, maintaining a commanding lead of 83,360 votes over Congress’ Ghasiram Majhi. BJD candidate Snehangini Chhuria is trailing the BJP candidate by 85,132 votes.

 

Snehangini Chhuria has so far bagged 38,314 votes, while Ghasiram Majhi has secured 40,086 votes. The BJP’s dominance has been consistent across rounds.

The Nuapada bypoll has drawn intense attention as a key contest in western Odisha. The seat fell vacant following the demise of the sitting BJD MLA. Three major parties — BJP, BJD, and Congress — had fielded strong candidates in a bid to capture the constituency.

 

The counting was being conducted in 26 rounds across 14 tables, under tight security and supervision by election officials. However, later it was extended to 29 rounds. Final results are expected shortly.
