Dhenkanal, Apr 24: A notorious criminal was injured in an encounter with Dhenkanal police near Mangalpur area in the wee hours of Thursday.

The accused, Debasis Behera, who has 18 criminal cases registered against him, was critically injured during the operation and is currently undergoing treatment at the Dhenkanal District Headquarters Hospital (DHH).

According to reports, the police team, acting on reliable inputs about the presence of the accused, launched a search operation. The encounter unfolded as police intercepted Behera while he was allegedly planning criminal activities.

On seeing the police personnel, Behera started running away when the police personnel chased him and opened fire. Following the incident, the accused sustained gun shots on his leg.

A case has been registered and further investigation into the incident is underway.
