Kendrapara, Sep 11: More than 1,000 migrant workers from Odisha’s Kendrapara district are reportedly stranded in Nepal as violent protests triggered by the Gen-Z movement continue to disrupt life across the Himalayan nation.
Families back home are growing increasingly anxious about their safety, as communication remains limited and food supplies dwindle.
The unrest in Nepal began after the government imposed a sweeping ban on 26 social media platforms, sparking youth-led demonstrations across Kathmandu and other cities. The protests quickly escalated into widespread violence, arson, and political upheaval, forcing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign.
Among those affected are daily wage labourers and plumbing technicians from villages like Mandapada, Balabhadrapur, Baliapatna, Damarpur, Singiri, and Manikpatna in Pattamundai and Aul blocks.

These workers had migrated to Nepal for livelihood, but now find themselves trapped indoors due to curfews and street violence.
Families in Kendrapara report that their loved ones are living like prisoners, locked inside rented rooms with no access to food or safety. “The violence outside has forced them to stay hidden. Their food stock is exhausted, and we are helpless,” said a relative of one stranded worker.
The Nepal Army has imposed curfews in key districts, including Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur, while allowing limited public movement. However, the situation remains tense, and no official response has yet come from Kendrapara district administration regarding evacuation or support.
Local residents are urging both the Odisha and central
governments to intervene and facilitate the safe return of stranded workers.
Many families are holding on to hope, waiting for news and praying for their
loved ones’ safety.
