No Flood Threat Yet as Mundali Sees Peak Water Flow

Key Points

Third wave of floodwater from Hirakud reaches Mundali, peaking at 6.14 lakh cusecs.

Water level remains below danger mark; no immediate flood threat reported. Water Resources Department officials actively monitoring and managing gate operations.

Bhubaneswar, Sep 7: The third wave of floodwater from Hirakud Dam reached Mundali on Saturday morning, following continuous rainfall triggered by a low-pressure system. Authorities had opened 24 sluice gates at Hirakud on Friday to release excess water, which has now begun flowing downstream into the Mahanadi river system.

At 7 AM, Mundali recorded a discharge of 5.90 lakh cusecs, which increased to 6.14 lakh cusecs by 11 AM. However, the water level remains below the danger mark of 99.00 feet, currently standing at 89.33 feet, indicating no immediate flood threat.

Senior engineers from the Water Resources Department visited Mundali to assess the situation. As of 10 AM, the discharge peaked at 6.08 lakh cusecs, but officials confirmed that the flow is expected to reduce gradually. With only four gates now open at Hirakud, the inflow to Mundali is projected to stabilize below 6.20 lakh cusecs.

Authorities have assured that there is no flood-like situation at present. However, precautionary measures are being taken in low-lying areas, and residents have been advised to remain alert. The controlled release of water is part of standard flood management protocols, and the situation is being monitored round-the-clock.

The Hirakud Dam, one of Asia’s largest earthen dams, plays a vital role in flood control across Odisha. With monsoon rains swelling its reservoir, timely gate operations have helped prevent overflow and maintain structural safety.
