Rourkela, Oct 21: This Diwali, AASRA—the social service club of NIT Rourkela—once again blended celebration with compassion through its Annual Diya Project. The initiative, now a cherished tradition, empowers underprivileged women from nearby communities by providing them a platform to showcase their artistry and earn a dignified livelihood, officials said on Tuesday.

Empowerment Through Art

Each year, AASRA volunteers sell beautifully handcrafted diyas made by local women, with all profits directly benefiting the artisans. This year, over 59 women participated, bringing their creativity, patience, and intricate designs to life. The project not only offers financial support but also celebrates the talent and resilience of these women, turning Diwali into a festival of empowerment.

To mark the success of the initiative, a celebratory meet-up was held on Diwali evening at OSAP and Sector-21. The event was graced by Prof. H. B. Sahu (Dean, AIIR, NIT Rourkela), AASRA Club President Bhaskar Singh, and other club members. The gathering served as a moment of gratitude and recognition for the artisans whose work lit up homes and hearts across the campus.

Widespread Support

The NIT Rourkela community—students, faculty, and residents—rallied behind the cause, purchasing diyas and spreading awareness. AASRA volunteers, operating under the Student Activity Centre, worked tirelessly to set up stalls, engage with buyers, and share the inspiring stories behind each diya.

Beyond the Diya Project, AASRA continues its year-round commitment to social development through educational outreach, health drives, and community programs across Rourkela. This Diwali, the glow of each diya symbolized not just festivity, but hope, dignity, and shared humanity.
