Kolkata, Sep 29: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday conducted raids and search operations at five locations across West Bengal as part of an ongoing probe into suspected sleeper cells of the Bangladeshi fundamentalist-cum-militant outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) in the state.
Sources familiar with the development said the searches were linked to a case registered in neighbouring Assam. The NIA launched the operations in West Bengal based on specific information gathered by its officials during the course of the investigation. The locations where Tuesday's raid and search operations were conducted included Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas district, Harirampur in South Dinajpur district and a couple of pockets in East Burdwan district.
Last week, the NIA sleuths arrested a youth in Assam on suspicion of being a militant. The investigators found that the arrested youth was an active member of JMB. During interrogation, he admitted that a module of that Bangladesh-based militant organisation was quite active in West Bengal.
His interrogation also revealed that JMB was working to create sleeper cells in West Bengal, where several youths from a particular community were being brainwashed to join that banned Bangladesh-based outfit.

In July this year, the West Bengal Police Special Task Force (STF) arrested Hamid Mondal, a youth suspected of having links with both Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and the Shahzad Bhatti Network (SBN), a Pakistan-based terrorist-criminal group.
Mondal had allegedly been living in West Bengal for a considerable period using fake Indian identity documents. According to the investigation, his latest assignment involved gathering information on the movements of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
Following his interrogation, STF officials arrested several of his alleged associates based on information provided by him. Among those arrested was Arpita Sarkar, a young woman who was allegedly being used to honey-trap influential people.
