Key Points
NIA takes over Bhubaneswar blast probe after prime accused Mafi’s death, interrogates seven including his girlfriend, investigates RDX use, interstate links, and possible Delhi connection to uncover wider terror conspiracy.
Bhubaneswar, Apr 6: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has officially taken charge of the probe into the Bhubaneswar bomb blast that shook Azad Nagar in Sundarpada under Airfield police station on January 27.
The explosion, which claimed the lives of prime accused Sehnawaz Malik alias Mafi and his mother while they were undergoing treatment, has now triggered a wider investigation into possible interstate terror links.
Following Mafi’s death, the NIA registered the case under number 1/2026 and assumed full responsibility from the Commissionerate Police.
The agency is interrogating seven individuals, including
Mafi’s girlfriend, to uncover deeper connections related to the blast.
Investigators are focusing on the seized RDX and its potential use in larger
terror operations, raising concerns about the scale of the conspiracy.

✨The NIA is also examining call detail records (CDRs) and statements from associates, which could expose the wider network involved.
Retired police officer Sarat Sahoo confirmed that Mafi’s girlfriend is under intense questioning, particularly regarding funding sources and interstate links. Senior lawyer Dibyananda Mishra added that investigators are probing connections with criminals outside Odisha and possible financial trails supporting the blast.
The NIA suspects that the Bhubaneswar explosion may have links to the Delhi blast, and if evidence surfaces, Mafi’s associates could face further charges. The agency is determined to trace the origins of the RDX and identify where such a large quantity was intended to be deployed. Officials believe this could unravel a broader terror plot with implications beyond Odisha.
As the probe intensifies, the NIA’s focus remains on dismantling the network behind the blast in a bid to prevent future threats.
The investigation is expected to reveal whether the
Bhubaneswar incident was an isolated act or part of a larger coordinated plan
involving interstate operatives.
