NHRC Teami Arrives At KIIT, Begins Probe In Nepali Student Suicide Case

Bhubaneswar, Feb 6: As scheduled, a team of the National Human Rights Commission arrived at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) here and started an investigation into the Nepali student's suicide case and the harassment meted out to Nepali students in the aftermath.


The team led by Registrar (Law) Joginder Singh visited the private university as per the commission's earlier announcement.


The NHRC has directed the team to investigate why the girl committed suicide, the institute's negligence in addressing her earlier complaints, and the reported harassment meted out to students from Nepal in the aftermath of the suicide incident. The team has been asked to submit its report to the commission before March 10.

Notably, a female student from Nepal was found dead in her hostel room under mysterious conditions. Following this, Nepalese students of the institute protested the girl's death, alleging negligence by the institute. As they intensified their protest, they were driven away from the campus.


They were allegedly tortured physically, mentally, and psychologically.


Taking note of the torture meted out to Nepalese students, the Prime Minister of Nepal sought the support of the authorities in ensuring the safety of Nepali students. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi assured all support to students from Nepal who are studying in the KIIT. It even formed a high-level committee to conduct an investigation into the sequence of incidents at the KIIT. KIIT founder Achyuta Samanta and other officils have already been interrogated by the team.

Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission approached the National Human Rights Commission, seeking justice for the deceased victim and safety for Nepali students.
