New Delhi/Bhubaneswar, July 2: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, has taken suo motu cognizance of a shocking incident in Odisha’s Ganjam district, where two individuals from the Scheduled Caste community were allegedly subjected to inhumane treatment by a group of people from another community, officials said on Wednesday.
According to reports, the victims were suspected of illegally smuggling cattle and were brutally assaulted on 26th June 2025. They were reportedly forced to eat grass and drink drain water. Their mobile phones were snatched, and their heads were forcibly shaved.
These acts, if proven true, constitute grave violations of human dignity and fundamental human rights.

✨The Commission noted that the allegations raise serious concerns under the Protection of Human Rights Act and constitutional safeguards provided to marginalized communities. Taking swift action, the NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police of Odisha, demanding a detailed report within two weeks.
The NHRC has directed that the report must clearly outline the steps taken against the accused, details of the investigation, and any relief or compensation extended to the victims. The Commission emphasized the urgency of ensuring accountability and protection for vulnerable communities.
