Bhubaneswar, Aug 7: Odisha celebrated National Handloom Day with grandeur and purpose, as Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi reaffirmed the state’s commitment to revive Odia identity through the empowerment of its handloom sector.

During an event, held at Janata Maidan, Chief Minister Majhi conveyed a strong message of pride and progress.

Bollywood icon Madhuri Dixit Nene also graced the occasion as the chief guest and was officially announced as the brand ambassador for Odisha Handloom, a move aimed at amplifying the global visibility of the state’s weaving legacy.

Addressing the gathering, CM Majhi said: “It is our responsibility to rescue and revive the essence of Odia identity from crisis. Today is a day of pride and remembrance. The handloom sector is not just our economic backbone—it is a celebration of our dignity and heritage.

In honour of our weavers, the Prime Minister launched National Handloom Day in 2015. Between 2015 and 2025, the country has witnessed sales of Rs 1.5 lakh crore in Khadi and handloom products. There has been a 315% increase in sales, 400% growth in production, and 81% rise in employment in the Khadi and handloom sector nationwide."

The Chief Minister further stated that, in Odisha, 1.3 lakh weavers across 30 districts have been engaged. We are striving for their social and economic upliftment, providing marketing and e-commerce support to boost their reach.

"Odisha handloom has gained demand in France, Japan, the USA, and Singapore, with our weavers participating in various international expos. To inspire youth, the state government will introduce fellowship and internship programs in the handloom sector," said the CM.

The Chief Minister urged citizens to wear Odisha handloom at least once a week and embrace the spirit of Swadeshi, promoting indigenous products and empowering local artisans.
