BJD's 29th Foundation Day.

Key Points

  • Rift surfaces during BJD’s 29th Foundation Day celebrations.

  • Munna Khan criticises Pandian without taking his name, countered by Pratap Jena.

  • Naveen Patnaik dismisses controversy, calls it mere rumours.

Bhubaneswar, Dec 26: A rift within the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) came to the fore during its 29th Foundation Day celebrations here on Friday, as discussions around Sujatha Pandian’s possible entry into the party intensified factional divides. What was meant to be a day of unity and reflection on the party’s legacy instead exposed internal fault lines, with leaders openly trading barbs over succession politics and representation.

Dispute on Foundation Day

The controversy sharpened on the celebratory stage itself. Rajya Sabha MP Munna Khan, once considered close to former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, lashed out at “double-faced politics” within the party and even issued a veiled threat against V.K. Pandian without taking his name. His remarks drew a sharp counter from senior party leader Pratap Jena, who accused Khan of attempting to sow confusion within the organisation.

Voices in Support

Despite criticism, senior leader Prabhat Biswal and several youth leaders rallied behind the Pandian couple. Biswal suggested that Sujatha Pandian should be considered for a Rajya Sabha seat, while youth and student leaders Chinmay Sahu and Ispita Sahu pressed for greater women’s representation, projecting Sujatha as a strong candidate.

Naveen Patnaik’s Stand

Addressing party workers on the occasion, BJD president Naveen Patnaik reiterated that the party is committed to fulfilling the aspirations of the people of Odisha and will continue to serve them for the next 100 years. He sought to downplay the controversy, stressing that the BJD is not the party of one or two individuals and dismissing the ongoing discussions as mere rumours.

What Lies Ahead

The debate has nonetheless intensified, with pro-Pandian and anti-Pandian factions locked in disagreement over Sujatha’s potential role. As the Rajya Sabha elections approach, the handling of her candidature could prove decisive in shaping the party’s internal dynamics and future cohesion.
