  • Former Cuttack-Barabati MLA Mohammed Moquim announced plans to launch a new regional political party by March-end.
  • A youth convention on January 12 will showcase support; focus on anti-liquor movements and youth/women empowerment.
  • The party will prioritize employment over freebie schemes and may include leaders from Congress and BJD.

Bhubaneswar, Jan 6: Former Cuttack-Barabati MLA Mohammed Moquim on Tuesday announced plans to float a new regional political party following his expulsion from the Congress. Speaking to Argus News, Mokim said the new outfit is expected to be formally launched by the end of March.

Ahead of the party’s formation, Moquim will organise a youth convention on January 12 as a show of strength. He said the event will see participation from young leaders drawn from 10 districts of coastal Odisha.

Moquim said consultations are currently underway with several individuals and organisations. “We are trying to bring together young leaders who have not been able to get adequate opportunities so far,” he said, adding that the name of the new party has not yet been finalised.

He also indicated that leaders from both the Congress and the BJD are likely to be part of the new political platform.

Reiterating his stand taken earlier in the new year, Moquim said the proposed party will focus on issues identified through interactions with people from different sections of society. He said liquor policy and opposition to freebie-based schemes would be among the key issues taken up by the party.

According to Moquim, the new regional party will be built around an emerging young leadership, with emphasis on youth empowerment, women’s empowerment, and support for anti-liquor movements. He said individuals committed to these causes would be given priority.

He further said the party’s objective would be development of the state, and stressed that efforts would be made to promote employment and livelihood opportunities in place of dependence on free distribution schemes.

It can be mentioned here that the All India Congress Committee (AICC) had expelled Moquim from the party’s primary membership, following allegations of engaging in activities that violated party discipline. The decision, approved by the AICC Disciplinary Committee, came after a formal proposal was submitted by Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Bhakta Charan Das.

Moquim's daughter Sofia Firdous -- who is in Congress -- is the sitting MLA from Barabati-Cuttack Assembly Constituency.
