New Delhi, Jul 15: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved two multi-tracking railway projects worth ₹3,907 crore. The projects will cover four districts across Odisha and Jharkhand, expanding the Indian Railways network by about 145 km.
Boost to Connectivity
The enhanced line capacity is expected to significantly improve mobility, operational efficiency, and service reliability. The projects will connect nearly 1,526 villages with a combined population of 14 lakh, while also improving access to prominent tourist destinations such as the Lalitgiri Buddhist Complex, Shree Baladevjew Temple, and Meghahatuburu Hills.
Freight and Economic Impact
According to a Cabinet communique, the routes are vital for transporting coal, iron ore, dolomite, limestone, and gypsum. The augmentation is projected to generate additional freight traffic of 44 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). Officials said the projects will reduce congestion and streamline operations, providing seamless connectivity for people, goods, and services.
Environmental Gains
The government highlighted the environmental benefits of the projects. Railways, being energy-efficient, will help reduce oil imports by six crore litres and cut carbon emissions by 29 crore kg — equivalent to planting one crore trees.
