Bhubaneswar, May 6: As a precautionary measure to protect oneself during any hostile attack, civilians will be given tips on what to do and what not to do during a civil defence mock drill, which will be held in the State today.

The civil defence mock drill will be held in 12 places- Talcher, Balasore, Koraput, Bhubaneswar, Gopalpur, Hirakud, Paradip, Rourkela, Bhadrak, Dhenkanal, Jagatsinghpur, and Kendrapara.

The mock drill assumes significance as tensions between India and Pakistan have risen after the April 22 terror attack at Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir that killed 26 tourists.

Fire Services DG Sudhanshu Sarangi said the mock drill would be held at 4 pm tomorrow. The siren will be on for 5 minutes. Everyone will remain alert. The general public will be made aware of how to be prepared in case of enemy air strikes. After the siren is sounded, people will go under the concrete roof to stay safe. The slum dwellers will be taken to the designated shelter.

The mock drill will be conducted in urban and coastal districts tomorrow, he said.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has asked several states to conduct mock drills for effective civil defence on 7th May.

The measures to be taken during the drill include operationalisation of Air Raid Warning Sirens, and training of civilians and students on the civil defence aspects to protect themselves in the event of a hostile attack, provision of crash black out measures, provision for early camouflaging of vital plants/installations, and updation of evacuation plan & its rehearsal.
