Bhubaneswar, Feb 2: Odisha’s flagship women empowerment initiative, Mission Shakti, is set to take a new leap with the announcement of smart phones, new uniforms, and identity cards for women members.

Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida made the declaration, stating that the distribution will begin from Utkal Divas.

This move aims to strengthen digital connectivity, streamline communication, and enhance transparency in the functioning of self-help groups (SHGs). The smartphones will serve as a tool for women to access government schemes, financial services, and training modules more efficiently.

In addition to smartphones, Mission Shakti members will receive newly designed uniforms and identity cards. Parida, who is also in charge of Mission Shakti Department, emphasized that the new dress code will reflect the essence of Odia identity (Odia Asmita) and cultural pride. She noted that these measures are not just symbolic but will help create a stronger sense of belonging and recognition for women working at the grassroots level.

‘Mission Shakti’ is a pioneering self-help initiative launched in Odisha in 2001, coinciding with International Women’s Day. The programme was designed to empower women by promoting Women Self Help Groups (WSHGs) and enabling them to engage in diverse socio-economic activities. Its core objective is to strengthen women’s livelihoods through access to credit, market linkages, and sustainable opportunities.

As a flagship programme of the Government of Odisha, Mission Shakti envisions that, over time, more and more women will become part of self-help groups, thereby contributing to community development and economic growth.

So far, nearly 70 lakh women have been mobilized into around 6 lakh groups across every block and urban local body in the state. To ensure the continued success of these groups and to encourage the formation of new ones, the government provides regular support, guidance, and monitoring throughout the year.

About ‘LokOS’ App

The LokOS application enables complete digitization of Self Help Group (SHG) networks across India. Available on both web and mobile platforms, it supports different user roles. The web version helps admins manage and approve SHGs, VOs, CLFs, members, and bookkeepers, while the mobile app quickly records ground-level activities like meetings, transactions, and registrations.

By shifting savings, lending, and repayment records to a digital platform, LokOS ensures transparency, reduces record-keeping workload, tracks real-time transactions, and boosts overall efficiency of community-based organizations.
