Bhubaneswar, Jan 29: The suspicious death of a young delivery worker has raised concern in the capital city after his body was recovered from a farmland near Pandara under Mancheswar police limits, two days after he was reported missing.

The deceased has been identified as Nilambar Bhoi, a resident of Laxmisagar area who had been living in Mahadev Nagar for the past two years while working with an online delivery company.

According to police, Bhoi had left home to deliver an order but never returned. His family lodged a missing complaint at Laxmisagar police station after repeated calls from the company and customers went unanswered.

On Thursday, his body was found in the field about 100 metres from the road in the Pandara area. A bicycle, a water bottle, and a bundle of clothes were discovered nearby, raising suspicions about the circumstances of his death.

The Mancheswar police, assisted by a scientific team, seized the body and sent it to Capital Hospital for post-mortem examination. Investigators are yet to ascertain whether the death was the result of foul play or a natural cause.

Police sources said mobile tracking helped locate the body. The investigation will focus on reconstructing Bhoi’s last movements and examining whether he was attacked or met with an accident.

The incident has highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by gig economy workers, who often operate late hours and in isolated areas. Questions about safety, insurance coverage, and support systems for delivery staff have resurfaced in the wake of this tragedy.

A senior police officer that a thorough probe will be conducted to establish the cause of death.
