Mild Earthquake Jolts Balangir, No Damage Reported
Residents Step Out as Tremors Felt in Balangir

Key Points

Balangir experienced mild tremors early Saturday morning, leaving residents alarmed but causing no damage, according to initial reports.
Balangir/Odisha, Apr 2: A mild earthquake was felt in Balangir district early Saturday morning, sparking panic among residents though no damage or casualties have been reported. The tremors occurred at around 4:40 a.m., prompting several locals to rush out of their homes in fear.

According to reports, the earthquake was mild in intensity and did not cause any structural damage. However, the sudden jolt created an atmosphere of anxiety among the people. This incident follows recent tremors in neighboring Kalahandi district, where mild earthquakes were recorded on April 29 and April 30.

On April 29, at 7:42 p.m., Kalahandi experienced a quake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale. The following day, another tremor of 2.7 magnitude was recorded at 7:20 p.m. The back-to-back occurrences left residents startled, especially as both quakes struck around the same evening hours.

The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported that the epicenter of the earlier Kalahandi quake was located at a depth of approximately 24 kilometers beneath the earth’s surface, with coordinates at latitude 19.635 and longitude 82.705. The Balangir tremor, though mild, has reignited concerns about seismic activity in the region.

Experts explain that earthquakes occur due to the movement of tectonic plates beneath the earth’s crust. The planet’s seven major plates are constantly in motion, and when they collide or shift, stress builds up along fault zones. Once the pressure exceeds the strength of the rocks, energy is released in the form of seismic waves, resulting in earthquakes.

In Balangir’s case, the tremors were mild and short-lived, but they served as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity. While no damage has been reported, the psychological impact on residents was evident, with many expressing fear and uncertainty.

Authorities have assured that there is no cause for alarm, but the recent sequence of tremors in Odisha highlights the importance of preparedness and awareness. Disaster management agencies continue to monitor seismic activity closely to ensure timely alerts and safety measures.

For now, Balangir and Kalahandi remain safe, but the tremors have underscored the unpredictable nature of earthquakes and the need for vigilance in seismic-prone areas.
