Bhubaneswar, Nov 26: The Chilika Wildlife Division has reported a significant rise in migratory bird arrivals this season, with numbers crossing 2 lakhs. Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Amlan Nayak confirmed that 87 species have been sighted so far, compared to around 60 species during the same period last year.
Calling the increase a “positive sign,” Nayak said it is too early to specify which species have arrived. Chilika Lake, Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon, is a critical wintering ground for migratory birds from across the globe.

✨Authorities have also stepped-up, anti-poaching measures. Two poachers were detected in the Tangi area; one has been arrested while the other remains at large. Nayak noted that poachers are more active along the shores, prompting intensified surveillance with drones and checks in suspected areas.
The surge in bird numbers is expected to boost conservation efforts and eco-tourism in the region.
