Migrant Labour Exploitation Claims Yet Another Life in Odisha

Balangir, Apr 9: Balangir district of Odisha continues to grapple with the grim reality of migrant labour exploitation. A heart-wrenching incident from Samarasing village in Tureikela block under Kantabanji constituency in Balangir district, sheds light on the relentless challenges faced by migrant workers.
A woman labourer, Subhagini Majhi, who had been sent out of Odisha to work at a brick kiln, tragically died due to negligence by her employer.
Subhagini, along with her husband Udhab Majhi, had been taken to another state by a contractor to work at a brick kiln. Faced with excruciatingly long working hours and poor conditions, Subhagini's health deteriorated significantly.
Despite her husband’s pleas for medical attention, the kiln owner chose to send them back home by train instead of providing necessary care.
The journey proved fatal for Subhagini, whose condition worsened during transit, leading to her death. Her husband returned to the village, carrying her body back.
The tragedy underscores the precarious situation of migrant workers and highlights the urgent need for worker protection laws.
Udhab Majhi now faces unimaginable grief, having lost his wife and companion without access to justice or support.
