Baripada, Nov 23: A woman was allegedly beaten to death by her husband in Panchagochhia village under Moroda police limits in Mayurbhanj district, a source said Sunday.

According to the source, the accused, identified as Shankarshan Dhanik, had returned home late Saturday night in an intoxicated state when an argument broke out with his wife, Raibari Dhanik. The dispute escalated, and Shankarshan allegedly assaulted her with a bamboo stick, hitting her on the head. The woman died on the spot, the source added.

Villagers informed the police on Sunday morning after discovering the incident. Officers reached the scene and arrested the accused, initiating a probe.

Residents of Panchagochhia village have repeatedly complained about widespread illegal trade of locally brewed liquor. Locals said that despite police action from time to time, arrested bootleggers often obtained bail and resumed the illicit business.

Police said the deceased is survived by two daughters and a minor son.
