Mayurbhanj, June 23: A mother and a child were injured in an elephant attack in Baghajharan village under Muruda Police Station limits in Rasgovindpur range of Mayurbhanj district. 

The incident reportedly took place late Saturday night (around 2 am Sunday) when a herd of elephants entered the village area and attacked the house of Kailash Nayak. The earthen wall of the house collpased due to the attack.

Kailash Nayak's daughter in law Ranjita Nayak and her two-year-old daughter Itishree, who were asleep at that time, got injured when the earthen wall of the house collapsed. 

Later, all the family members rescued them and took them to the nearest hospital before the mother-child duo were transferred to PRM Hospital, Baripada.

Ranjita's leg was broken while Itishree's leg also suffered injuries. Both have been admitted to the female orthopedic department of PRM Hospital and are undergoing treatment.

Elephant terror is reportedly increasing day by day in different areas of Mayurbhanj district. During the day, herds of elephants live in the nearby rural forests and they move into populated areas in the evening in search of food. 

The forest department has also failed to drive away the elephants. The news of premature loss of many lives due to the clash between elephants and humans is coming to light every day.
