Highest local rainfall recorded in Jamda; other areas saw a significant decline. Administration continues close monitoring of flood-prone areas; emergency measures in place.
Mayurbhanj, Jun 30: The flood situation in Mayurbhanj district remains under close watch, despite a noticeable dip in rainfall over the past 24 hours. Several rivers, including the Subarnarekha, remain in spate, crossing danger levels in certain locations even as rain intensity begins to subside.
According to data from the India Meteorological Department, areas like Similipal have recorded significantly reduced rainfall since Sunday. In Jamsholaghat, the Subarnarekha River is currently flowing above the danger mark, while at Baripada, the Budhabalanga River’s water level has dropped below critical levels, offering some relief to residents.
On Monday morning, a Red Warning was issued for the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, and Balasore. However, Mayurbhanj has since reported a decline in precipitation.
The Jamda block recorded the highest rainfall at 132 mm, followed by 110 mm in Saraskana, 97 mm in Rairangpur, 82 mm in Karanjia, and 79 mm in Kusumi — all considered modest by meteorological standards. Similipal’s rainfall statistics stood at 100.2 mm at Kabataghai, 93.98 mm at Ramtirtha, and 60.96 mm at Kendumundi.

Due to declining rainfall in upper catchments, rivers like Budhabalanga, Jambhira, Gangahar, Son, and Kal have seen water levels recede. However, heavy discharge from eight open gates of Galudihi Barrage in Jharkhand has led to rising water levels in the Subarnarekha River. As a result, floodwaters have entered low-lying areas of Rasgovindpur and Saraskana blocks.
On Saturday night, intense downpours caused waterlogging in many parts of Baripada town, but clearer skies and less rain on Sunday allowed for water drainage, bringing comfort to residents.
Emergency Officer Shraddha Suman confirmed that the district administration is on high alert, especially monitoring areas affected by the Subarnarekha’s overflowing waters.
