Puri, Aug 11: A man was apprehended by Puri Police after allegedly snatching a gold chain from a tourist who was bathing in the sea at the beach, a source said Tuesday.

The stolen chain was also recovered following a swift chase by the PCR-5 team of Puri Police.

According to the source, a group of tourists from Dhenkanal district had visited Puri and were bathing in the sea when the accused allegedly took advantage of the situation and snatched a gold chain from one of the tourists.

Suspect Flees Towards Hotel Lane
After allegedly committing the theft, the accused fled from the spot with the chain. On receiving information about the incident, the PCR-5 team immediately reached the location and began chasing the suspect, the source added.

The accused entered a nearby lane in an attempt to evade the police. During the chase, he allegedly threw the stolen gold chain near an electrical transformer, apparently in an attempt to get rid of the evidence and escape.

However, PCR-5 personnel continued to track his movements and eventually caught him while he was allegedly trying to flee from the area.

Meanwhile, Puri Police urged tourists and visitors to remain alert and take precautions while bathing at the beach, particularly by avoiding carrying valuables into the water.

Series Of Temple Thefts
In a separate incident in Puri district, a series of thefts was reported from three temples in Durgeswar and Baharana villages under the jurisdiction of Charichhak Police Station.

According to the source, the thefts took place late Monday night. Temple priests who arrived on Tuesday morning for daily rituals found the locks of the temples broken and informed locals.

Silver Ornaments, Brass Items Stolen
Silver ornaments, including a silver crown belonging to Maa Budhi Thakurani temple, were allegedly stolen. Brass items were also looted from the Darubrahma Aishaneswar Temple and the Radhakrushna Temple.

The total value of the stolen silver ornaments and brass and bronze items is estimated to be more than Rs 1 lakh.

Following the complaint, Charichhak Police reached the spot and launched an investigation into the temple thefts.
