Malkangiri, Dec 8: Tension gripped Malkangiri district after a violent clash erupted between residents of Rakhelguda and MV-26 villages, following the recovery of a tribal woman’s headless body from a riverbank. The incident triggered widespread unrest, leading to damage of property, arson, and looting, police said on Monday.
According to sources, hundreds of tribal residents from Rakhelguda armed with weapons stormed MV-26 on Sunday evening, attacking houses, destroying vehicles, and setting several homes ablaze. At least a dozen houses were damaged, and four were completely gutted in the violence
Escalation of Violence
Armed with traditional weapons such as bows, arrows, axes, and spears, thousands of tribals marched towards MV-26 after holding a meeting near the village market. Houses were set ablaze, vehicles vandalized, and property destroyed. More than three police personnel sustained injuries while trying to control the mob.
Internet Suspension & Legal Measures
To prevent further escalation and rumor-mongering, the district administration suspended internet services across Malkangiri for 24 hours starting 6 PM today. Prohibitory orders under BNS Section 163 remain in force, restricting public gatherings. Police forces conducted flag marches in sensitive areas to instill confidence among residents.
Police Deployment & Appeal for Peace
Senior officials, including Odisha DGP Y.B. Khurania, reached Malkangiri to oversee the situation. Malkangiri SP Binod Patil appealed to the public to maintain peace and assured strict action against those responsible. Additional police and BSF forces have been deployed to restore normalcy.
Background of the Clash
The unrest stems from the killing of a 51-year-old tribal woman from Rakhelguda. Her headless body was recovered from the Dudameta riverbank, sparking outrage among villagers who accused a family from MV-26 of involvement due to a prior land dispute. Despite police intervention, the missing head and lack of immediate arrests fueled anger, leading to repeated attacks on MV-26.
Security Tightened
The police administration has assured that investigations are underway and perpetrators will be brought to justice. Meanwhile, security forces continue to monitor sensitive areas to ensure the safety of residents and restore normalcy.
