New Delhi, Sep 6: The long-standing Mahanadi water dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh entered a new phase as the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal, chaired by Justice Bela M. Trivedi, commenced its hearing on Saturday.

 

The proceedings were marked by a spirit of cooperation, with both states indicating their willingness to resolve the issue amicably.

 

Representing Odisha, Advocate General Pitambar Acharya informed the tribunal that multiple meetings had taken place between officials of both states in August. These included discussions between the Water Resources Secretaries and Chief Secretaries of Odisha and Chhattisgarh.

 

Acharya also mentioned that another high-level meeting is scheduled for October, reflecting continued efforts toward reconciliation.

The Chhattisgarh Water Resources Secretary confirmed the same, acknowledging the progress made through inter-state dialogue. Acharya further revealed that during Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s recent visit to Delhi, he discussed the Mahanadi issue with the Union Home Minister Amit Shah, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter at the highest levels.

 

Both states have expressed readiness to take all necessary steps in the interest of their people, signalling a shift from confrontation to collaboration. The tribunal was briefed on the exchange of letters between the Chief Ministers and the proposal to form a joint technical committee under the guidance of the Central Water Commission.

 

This marks a hopeful turn in a dispute that has spanned years, affecting millions dependent on the Mahanadi river system.
