Koraput, July 3: Following incessant rainfall in the Lamtaput block of Koraput district, the Machkund Dam has released its first floodwater of the 2025 monsoon season.
With the reservoir’s water level rising to 2,588 feet, just 2 feet below its full capacity of 2,590 feet, authorities have opened two sluice gates no. 6 and 7 to discharge approximately 2,000 cusecs of water into the downstream Chitrakonda reservoir.
The Water Resources Department is closely monitoring inflow and rainfall activity. If precipitation continues, additional gates may be opened to manage the rising water levels, said a senior official.
So far, no damage or flooding has been reported in nearby villages, but local teams remain on alert.
The Machkund Dam plays a vital role in hydropower generation and irrigation, and often experiences surges during monsoon due to rainfall in both Odisha and neighboring Andhra Pradesh.
