Low-Pressure Formation: Heavy Showers Likely In Southern Odisha As Weather System Strengthens

Key Points
The weather disturbance is likely to intensify over the coming days, leading to increased precipitation and possible flooding in vulnerable regions
Bhubaneswar, May 23: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rainfall across southern Odisha as a low-pressure system develops over the Bay of Bengal.
According to IMD's latest forecasters, the weather disturbance is likely to intensify over the coming days, leading to increased precipitation and possible flooding in vulnerable regions.
The system, forming in the central Bay of Bengal, is expected to move west-northwestward, bringing significant rainfall to districts such as Ganjam, Kandhamal, Koraput, and Rayagada.
“Rainfall activities will begin to increase starting from the 27th and 28th of this month. Odisha is expected to receive light to moderate rainfall over most places, but southern districts may witness intense rainfall over one or two places,” said Director of the IMD regional centre in Bhubaneswar.
IMD officials have advised residents and local authorities to stay prepared for potential waterlogging and disruptions.
Meteorologists suggest that this weather pattern aligns with typical pre-monsoon activity, although its strength and movement will dictate the severity of rainfall.
Fishermen have been cautioned against venturing into deep sea areas, as wind speeds may also pick up, posing risks to navigation.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and may issue further warnings as the system progresses. Residents are urged to stay informed through official weather updates and take necessary precautions to ensure safety.
