Bhubaneswar, May 16: Several districts in Odisha have witnessed tragic deaths due to lightning strikes amid severe thunderstorms.

According to reports, at least three people lost their lives in Koraput's Paradiguda village when lightning struck a shelter where eight individuals had taken refuge during heavy rain.

The deceased include 60-year-old Budri Mandinga, her 18-year-old granddaughter Kasa Mandinga, and 35-year-old Ambika Kashi. Four others also sustained injuries.

Similarly, in Bhanjanagar’s Belaguntha police limits, a 23-year-old woman was fatally struck by lightning while collecting mangoes. Although she was rescued to hospital in Bhanjanagar, she was declared dead on arrival.

In Nabarangpur district’s Umerkote block, one person died and another was critically injured when lightning struck a group of people harvesting maize. In the incident, one Lalita Majhi succumbed while being transported to the hospital.

Additionally, Gajapati district’s R. Udayagiri police limits also reported another fatality due to lightning near Kanakata village, where a worker was struck while unloading bricks from a tractor.
