Leopard Population Declines In Odisha: NTCA Report

Bhubaneswar, Mar 1: Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav released the report on the Status of Leopards in India, on 29th February 2024 in New Delhi.

According to the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) report, population of leopard is declining in Odisha which raised concern among the wildlife activicts.

The latest reports of Leopards in India 2022 report by the NTCA has revealed such alarming facts. 

According to the report, in 2018 census, there were 760 leopards in the forests of Odisha. In 2022, the number dropped to 568.
 
However, the number of leopards across the country has increased to 13,874 in 2022 from 12,852 in 2018.

 The report expressed concern over the decline in tiger population in the Central India and Eastern Ghats landscape in Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Telangana.

Madhya Pradesh housed the largest population of leopards in the country at 3,907 in 2022 (2018: 3,421), followed by Maharashtra 1,985 (2018: 1,690), Karnataka at 1,879(2018: 1,783) and Tamil Nadu at 1,070 (2018: 868).
