Bhubaneswar, Jun 18: A festive gathering in the Laxmisagar area turned tragic after two individuals died and three others fell seriously ill following a community feast where liquor was consumed.

The incident, which initially sparked fears of toxic alcohol consumption, has now taken a new turn as preliminary investigations suggest the deaths may have been due to underlying health conditions rather than spurious liquor.

The deceased have been identified as Biswajit Beura (26) and Santosh Nayak (30), both residents of Laxmisagar.

According to reports, the two were part of a group of five who attended a feast hosted by Basudev Das in the Bankual area. The group reportedly consumed food and liquor during the event and later got drenched in the rain. All five fell ill shortly after, with two succumbing over the following days.

Initial suspicions pointed to adulterated liquor as the cause, prompting public outrage and a swift response from the Excise Department. However, medical reports accessed by the department have indicated that the deaths were not caused by toxic alcohol. Officials have stated that the allegations of spurious liquor are “unfounded” based on current evidence.

Statements from the host and the victims’ families have been recorded. The Excise Department has also contacted the Bhubaneswar DCP and is prepared to examine CCTV footage from the liquor shop in question if necessary.

While the shop has not been sealed, officials are closely monitoring the situation. The incident has reignited concerns over liquor safety and public health, especially during the monsoon season.
