Law Commission To Look For Nonessential Laws In Odisha: Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan

Bhubaneswar, Dec 28: A day after the constitution of Law Commission in Odisha, the state Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan said Saturday that it will search for the unnecessary laws.

Notably, the Odisha government Friday constituted a 5-member Law Commission with Justice Biswanath Rath as its chairperson.

"Law Commission will look for useless laws in the state," said Harichandan, adding that the role of the Law Commission will be "very important for establishing good governance".

Harichandan, who is also in charge of Excise and Works Departments, revealed that a Professor of Law Education will also be included as a member of the Law Commission.

"The state needed this (the Law Commission). This commission will evaluate the various policies and laws in the state," informed Minister Harichandan.

"The commission will make necessary changes to the policies and laws. It will also make necessary corrections and find out the nonessential laws. They will later submit a report and recommend to the government about ways to improve and modify the existing policies and laws," explained the Law Minister.

He also said that the state government will later take an appropriate call on this, adding that the Law Commission's role is "important for establishing good governance".

Earlier, in a notification, the Law department said the State government has appointed former judge of Orissa High Court, Justice Biswanath Rath as Chairman of Law Commission and four others as its Members.

Advocate General Pitambar Acharya and Principal Secretary, Law department have been appointed as Ex-Officio Members of the Commission. Senior advocates Surya Prakash Mishra and Soura Chandra Mohapatra have been appointed as Members of the Commission, while additional secretary, Law department will be the Member Secretary.

The commission would examine existing laws and suggest ways to improve and modify them, official sources said.
