Key Points

The land acquisition process has begun for a proposed 7.65-km national highway project across Chilika Lake in Odisha, with the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issuing a notification for the project.

Puri, Oct 26: The land acquisition process has begun for a proposed 7.65-km national highway project across Chilika Lake in Odisha, with the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issuing a notification for the project, a source informed on Monday.

The proposed road will start near Satapada on National Highway-316 and connect areas including Brahmapur, Janhikuda, Kairasi, Patanasi and Golpur. It will subsequently link with NH-516A in Krushnaprasad block of Puri district.

Around 3.34 km of the proposed stretch will comprise a bridge. The project is expected to require approximately 34 hectares of land, with acquisition planned in Satapada and other areas along the alignment.

Distance Between Satapada And Janhikuda To Reduce

The project aims to reduce the distance between Satapada and Jhanikuda to around 5.5 km. It is also claimed that the road will shorten the distance between Brahmapur and Puri by approximately 135 km.

The proposed highway is expected to improve connectivity between parts of Puri and Ganjam districts. However, the project has also raised concerns over its potential impact on Chilika Lake’s environment and biodiversity.
