Puri, June 27: The sacred town of Puri transformed into a vibrant sea of devotion today as lakhs of pilgrims from across India and abroad gathered to witness the grand Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra.

The majestic chariots, stationed outside the Shree Jagannath Temple, are all set to roll down the Grand Road, marking the beginning of the deities’ annual journey to the Gundicha Temple.

The ceremonial Pahandi procession began early in the morning, with the deities being brought out of the sanctum amid chants of “Jay Jagannath,” rhythmic drumbeats, and the blowing of conch shells.

The atmosphere was electric as devotees surged forward to catch a glimpse of the divine siblings and to participate in pulling the sacred chariots — a ritual believed to bestow immense spiritual merit.


The Shree Mandir was transformed into a breathtaking floral sanctuary ahead of the grand Rath Yatra. Nearly 3,000 kilograms of flowers—including marigolds, tuberoses, orchids, and roses—have been used to adorn the temple gates such as the Singhadwara, Nata Mandap, and Bhoga Mandap, as well as the Gundicha Temple.

In anticipation of the massive turnout, the Odisha government, deployed over 10,000 security personnel and installed more than 275 AI-enabled CCTV cameras to ensure safety and smooth conduct of the event.

An Integrated Command and Control Centre was also set up for real-time monitoring of the festivities.

Union Ministers, including Dharmendra Pradhan, joined the devotees in offering prayers, while President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended their greetings to the nation on this auspicious occasion.

The festival, which symbolises the annual visit of Lord Jagannath to his aunt’s abode, will continue for nine days, culminating in the return journey known as Bahuda Yatra.

Despite intermittent rain, spirits remained high, and the atmosphere in Puri was electric with devotion, color, and joy — a living testament to India’s enduring spiritual heritage.
