Koraput, Jan 30: Cops from Borigumma police station in Odisha's Koraput district claimed a major success after foiling an alleged dacoity plan and arresting six youths, officials said Friday.

Addressing a press conference, SDPO Satyabrata Lenka said the arrests were made during night patrolling on January 28 after police received specific information around 12:30am that a group of eight to nine youths was planning a large-scale dacoity. Acting on the tip-off, a patrol team rushed to Kasaguda Chhak, where the suspects attempted to flee on seeing the police vehicle.

Police managed to detain three youths at the spot, while the remaining three were arrested later at around 4:30am, the SDPO said. Several deadly weapons were seized from their possession during the operation.

According to Lenka, the arrested youths have previous criminal cases, including attempt to murder charges, registered against them in different police stations. He said the timely action helped prevent a major crime in the area.

The SDPO also credited newly appointed Borigumma IIC Ramananda Sahu for the successful operation, noting that the dacoity plan was foiled within a short period of his joining the police station.

Further investigation into the case is underway.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB)-2023 report, Odisha recorded 370 cases of dacoity last year, accounting for nearly 10 per cent of the national total. The state’s dacoity crime rate stands at 0.8 -- more than double the national average of 0.3. Data also shows that Odisha’s dacoity incidence is disproportionately high compared to its population share.
