Khariar, Jan 5: Khariar plunged into grief on Sunday following the demise of King Jitamitra Prasad Singh Deo, who passed away at the age of 80.
The renowned historian and archaeologist breathed his last at 1:35 pm after experiencing sudden chest pain earlier in the afternoon. His wife, Rani Rajashree Devi, was by his side during his final moments.
Singh Deo was widely admired not only as a royal figure but
also as a prolific historian and archaeologist. He earned honorary doctorates
from Sambalpur University and Tirupati Sanskrit University, cementing his
reputation as a distinguished researcher.

Over his lifetime, he authored 19 volumes on history and archaeology, many of which continue to serve as reference texts in universities across India and abroad.

✨His contributions to historical scholarship were vast and varied. Singh Deo’s work spanned studies on Yogimath’s prehistoric inscriptions, the history of South Kosal, Jagannath culture, the civilisations of the Upper and Lower Mahanadi, Ghata Ghummar rock art, and the Sarbapuria dynasty’s gold coins and copper plates.
He had also explored the origins of the Jagannath deity, tantric art traditions of Odisha, and even modern historical assassinations. His meticulous research and discoveries of historic sites in Nuapada district have left an indelible mark on Odisha’s cultural and academic landscape.
Tributes have poured in from scholars, cultural leaders, and citizens alike, remembering Singh Deo as a man who bridged tradition and scholarship. His legacy is expected to inspire future generations of historians and researchers.
He is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter. Following the coronation of Yuvaraj Deb Singh Deo, the last rites of Jitamitra Prasad Singh Deo will be performed on Monday at the Nehena River ghat.
The ceremony is expected to draw large crowds as Khariar
bids farewell to one of its most revered figures.
