Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi approved a Rs74.78 crore welfare package for kendu leaf workers, including a hike in leaf prices, 25% bonus for pluckers and 5% incentives for binders and seasonal staff, benefiting lakhs of families dependent on forest produce.

Bhubaneswar, Jul 13: The Odisha government on Monday announced a significant welfare package for kendu leaf workers, raising leaf prices and approving bonus and incentive payments for lakhs of pluckers, binders and seasonal staff across the state.

As per Chief Minister Mohan Majhi’s decision, the price of a kendu leaf keri (bundle of 20 leaves) has been increased by 10 paise, while the price of a phal (bundle of 40 leaves) has been raised by 20 paise. The revision will cost the state exchequer Rs10.78 crore, officials said.

In addition, kendu leaf pluckers will receive a 25 per cent bonus, while binders and seasonal staff will be given a 5 per cent incentive. The government has earmarked Rs64 crore for these payments. Together, the measures amount to Rs74.78 crore.

Officials said the package reflects the government’s commitment to improving the livelihoods of kendu leaf workers, who form a vital part of Odisha’s forest-based economy. The Chief Minister’s Office stated that the decision was aimed at providing direct financial support to workers ahead of the upcoming season.

Kendu leaves, used in the manufacture of bidis, are a major source of income for tribal and rural households in several districts. The welfare package is expected to provide relief to workers who have long demanded better remuneration and recognition of their contribution.

By approving the bonus and incentives, the government has sought to address concerns over wage disparities and seasonal hardships faced by kendu leaf workers. The announcement is likely to benefit thousands of families dependent on leaf collection and processing, reinforcing the state’s focus on inclusive welfare measures.
