Kalbaisakhi Rains To Bring Temporary Relief From Scorching Heat

Key Points
IMD issues alerts as thunderstorms and gusty winds set to impact multiple districts.
Bhubaneswar, Apr 16: Odisha is set to experience Kalbaisakhi (nor'wester) storms over the next seven days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing yellow alerts for several districts.
The storms, characterised by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, are expected to bring temporary relief from the ongoing heatwave conditions.
Currently, two low-pressure zones are active over the state. One extends from Sikkim to northern Odisha, while the other stretches from eastern Madhya Pradesh to Gangetic West Bengal. These systems are likely to trigger rainfall across Odisha, with interior districts experiencing less impact compared to coastal and western regions.
The IMD has forecast wind speeds of 40-50 kmph in northern, coastal, and western Odisha, prompting authorities to issue yellow warnings. Southern Odisha will also experience light rainfall and gusty winds, though the impact is expected to be less severe.
Districts including Kalahandi, Balangir, Nuapada, Boudh, Kandhamal, Sonepur, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Deogarh, Jharsuguda, and Sundargarh have been placed under yellow warnings due to expected thunderstorms.
Despite the storms, no significant temperature changes are expected over the next five days. Residents are advised to stay alert and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities.
